Croton River
SHELTER ISLAND PADDLER CLUB
The entrance to the Croton River is located near the Croton-on-Hudson train station
next to the Hudson River. It travels about 1.5 miles to a large set of rapids that is
about Class II when it is running well. An island splits the river with small rapids on
either side. Further up river is the Croton Gorge Park, which is beautiful in the
summer.
When the tide is ebbing it can be difficult to paddle up river. At low tide during the
summer, paddlers can expect to portage over low spots near the mouth of the river.
Recreational kayaks, although slower than sea kayaks, are the way to go since they
are more stable and easier to turn. Overall, it is a great way to get out for a couple of
hours on a nice day.
