Hay Beach
SHELTER ISLAND PADDLER CLUB
Hay Beach is home to a bunch of dead ends and a few town landings that are good
put-in spots.
There are many rocks littering the shoreline near the Orient Lane dead end, so be
careful when maneuvering around.
It can get choppy near Hay Beach Point at the northern tip of the island as the water
is pinched between the island and Greenport and rushes through the bottleneck.
Good stopping points for beach-going are Carousel Lane, Highberry Lane and
Menhaden Lane - which is also the most popular spot for bluefishing during the
early summer.
Don't feel weird taking the kayak and your fishing rod out past the surfcasters at
Menhaden Lane because the bluefish, and sometimes stripers, will hook on and
take you for a fun ride.
