North Ferry
SHELTER ISLAND PADDLER CLUB
The channel that runs through the North Ferry area can be your best or worst friend
depending on the tides.
At flood tide you'll have a tough time jostling through the chop in front of the ferry
slips in addition to dealing with the ferries as they take wide turns to come into the
slips.
The water can get very rough so it's better to stay closer to the ferry slips and time
your approach carefully. Paddle through once the ferries have left and are out in
open water.
Timing is crucial as you don't want to end up in the whitewash of the ferries either.
