Ram Island Causeways
The first put-in spot on First
Causeway is just 200 yards from
Ram Island Drive.
SHELTER ISLAND PADDLER CLUB
The Ram Island Causeways are unique in their own rights.
First Causeway features a lot of sea grass along the shoreline on the Coecles
Harbor side. There are some nice calm spots where you can view the osprey nests
and a few turn off areas where you can put in your kayak or canoe.
The outside of First Causeway includes views of the popular fishing site of
Menhaden Lane and Bug Light near Orient Point.
Much of the outside of Second Causeway is blocked access due to the few piping
plovers that actually inhabit the area.
The inside is a little more rough than First Causeway as you are getting toward the
outer edge of Coecles Harbor. There is a good put-in spot near Ram's Head Inn.
As you get further out toward Big Ram you will get a chance top view the many
egrets and cormorants that will be swimming and hunting for fish. Please keep
your distance from all wild animals and let them enjoy their true habitat.
BEST ROUTE: A good route to go for a two-hour paddle is to start at First Causeway
and loop around Big Ram and Reel Point, coming back to First Causeway.
TIP: Wherever you decide to paddle in this area, watch out for the many rocks and
small boulders that rise up within a few hundred yards of the shoreline.

Looking toward Orient Point,
there are multiple put-in spots as
you get closer to Little Ram
Island, as seen in the pictures
above and below.
A popular put-in spot is at the
town landing on the Coecles
Harbor side. Please be
considerate of others and keep
your vehicles to the side of the
town landings.
