SHELTER ISLAND PADDLER CLUB
Shell Beach is over a mile long and features a point that is popular for sunbathing
and friendly gatherings. You need a beach parking permit to park there, so be sure
to get a seasonal permit at
Town Hall.

The current is strong around the point during the incoming tide, but can be tranquil
much of the time.

After being closed since summer 2008, the beach underwent a restoration during
the winter and re-opened on April 1, 2009. The exterior embankment was shored
up, steps down to the beach were constructed and new beach plantings now grace
the sides of the entrance.

The southwestern parts of the beach feature bulkheads, so avoid them. You can
pull up to any part of the beach, but a few sections on the northeast side are roped
off due to the piping plover nesting areas and a sump full of drying dredge spoils,
so don't go there.

Bring the fishing pole because bluefish can be caught off the point when the tide is
right. Look for striped bass around the three bulkheads.

For a good afternoon of paddling, head across from Shell Beach to Wade's Beach,
"the current", Menantic Creek or West Neck Creek.
