Silver Beach
SHELTER ISLAND PADDLER CLUB
Silver Beach is comprised of the southwest quadrant of the island and holds many
put-in spots where you can access many parts of the south side of the island.
As you enter Silver Beach, there is a refurbished bulkhead (June 2005) at the
Brander Parkway inlet that is home to a few power boats, but remains the perfect
spot to begin your paddle. There is calm water and nice scenery while exiting
toward Shell Beach, but stay to the side when leaving the inlet because power
boats may be entering.
A rarely used town landing at the end of Bayshore Drive is hidden and overridden
with sediment, beach growth and unused boats. However, if you're looking for a
quiet spot with a soft landing that won't damage your kayak/canoe, this is a good
location.
A grassy town landing just north of Shell Beach on East Brander Parkway and
another a few hundred yards north at Lois Lane (yes, that's the real name) are two
more spots where you have access to West Neck Creek and Shell Beach.
The town landing on Peconic Avenue, just past the traffic triangle, is not in the
greatest condition and you have to carry your kayak/canoe to the beach for access.
However, there's no problem parking there. But once you're in, you're met by choppy
waters where you can paddle to Crab Creek to the north or Shell Beach to the
south. A nice sight is the osprey nest on top of a red-roofed dock covering.
