Annual Events
Aside from the obvious spring and summer paddles, I usually try to get in a few
good tours in my kayak during the week between Christmas and New Year's.

If you would like to have your summertime recreational community event listed
here, please e-mail me at
zooman@sipaddlerclub.com . Here is a list of some
times of the seasons to look forward to on Shelter Island:
BLUEFISH AND STRIPER FISHING BY KAYAK:
Head down to Menhaden Lane and fish for bluefish and stripers by kayak around
sunset. A guaranteed catch! But stay far enough out past the surf casters if you
know what's good for ya'.
MARCH-MAY
Event Calendar & Information
SPRING PADDLES:
Go for a paddle around Coecles Harbor and keep an eye out for the ospreys as
they make their return from the warm weather.
JUNE-AUGUST
JULY
FIREWORKS BY PADDLE:
After a long day of barbecuing and beach-bumming, paddle to Crescent Beach
and take in the Chamber of Commerce's annual fireworks display at dusk.
ISLAND CIRCUMNAVIGATION:
Get up early and be ready for a full day of beautiful sights and sounds as you see
every side of Shelter Island - from the water, a totally different vantage point. Bring
plenty of water and lunch, and be ready for a good workout. By the end of the day
you will need a rest.

Here I am in my Old
Town Otter two days
after Thanksgiving on
11/29/08. Paddling
through Coecles
Harbor and out to
Taylor's Island was
great.
That's my buddy E.K.
'yakkin' in another
Otter. The small
kayaks did the trick in
a little wind a slight
chop. Notice the
sweatshirt - Let's Go
Islanders!
We took a walk
around Taylor's Island
for a break from sitting
in the kayaks.

Memorial Day weekend
paddle to Mashomack's
southwest side. 15-20
knot winds and low tide.
Two creeks and a
submerged friend kept
us busy.
I took this self-portrait on 5/22/09 in
near perfect conditions off
Menhaden Lane. Kayak fishing
yielded three bluefish during low
tide and a number of other bites.
70 degrees and little wind.
8.28.09
Paddled past Bug Light
to Orient Point in 15-20
knot westerly winds
with 25 knot gusts. 1-2
foot waves. Used a
16-foot Chinook kayak
to get through the
whitecaps. Weather
came after Hurricane
Bill and before
Hurricane Danny.
Cancelled the paddle to
Gardiner's Island due to
the weather.
